ScotRail has recorded its busiest day of the year and since the start of public ownership.

On the 12th December, 345,216 journeys were made, surpassing the record of 337,441 set just last month.

This record surpasses previous milestones set by significant events and concerts, including Taylor Swift and Oasis.

Many people have been travelling to the Christmas markets, completing Christmas shopping and attending parties and nights out via train.

ScotRail had anticipated higher passenger numbers and added extra services in the run-up to Christmas so more people could travel at lower fares, following the scrapping of peak fares.

“We thank customers for their continuing support.

“It’s great to see so many people choosing to travel with ScotRail at one of the busiest times of the year.

“Friday’s record numbers show the hard work of our teams in adding extra services, running longer trains, and supporting our customers during this busy season.

“With Christmas parties, shopping trips, and celebrations underway – and with peak fares gone for good – rail offers a simple, cost-effective way to travel.

“We’ll keep focusing on providing the reliable service, seats, and support our customers expect as we approach Christmas and the New Year.”

David Ross, ScotRail Chief Operating Officer
