Open access train operator Lumo has made Daft As A Brush Cancer Patient Care its official charity partner.

This means that from January, passengers whose journeys are delayed will be able to easily donate their Delay Repay payouts to the charity if they so wish. Lumo will also help to raise the profile of the charity’s work and will provide expert help from its staff to Daft As A Brush.

‘Daft As A Brush’ specialises in transporting cancer patients to their treatment appointments free of charge. Although it is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, it helps cancer patients across the North of England. It is appealing for more volunteers, with a particularly urgent need in Durham and Sunderland.

The charity collects patients from their homes and transports them to the place where they will receive their treatment. The journey provides a safe and comfortable environment, with a volunteer companion travelling with the patient and remaining with them during their treatment if needed. The charity then takes them home again.

It runs thousands of cancer patient journeys each year, operating a large fleet of blue ambulances, and with the efforts of hundreds of volunteers.

Lumo, which earlier this month launched a new service between London and Glasgow, described the charity’s work as “inspirational”.

Lumo has also carried out other charitable activities, including taking a family on a day out with Wallace and Gromit earlier this year.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Lumo – a collaboration that brings together our shared commitment to community, compassion and sustainability as we move towards fully electric ambulances.“By working with Lumo, our message can reach more people, raising greater awareness of the support we provide to cancer patients on a national stage. Our aim is to ensure that more people living with cancer can access free transport to and from hospital appointments.“This partnership is about showing what can be achieved when charities and forward-thinking organisations come together for the public good.”

Andrea Glover, Chief Executive Officer of newcastle-based charity, Daft As A Brush
