Between 24th December and 15th January, the West Coast Main Line will be upgraded, meaning that passengers are advised to check before they travel.

Numerous projects are being carried out, including a £60 million replacement of Clifton Bridge near Penrith, which is now fully assembled; a £61 million signalling upgrade north of Carlisle; a further £6 million on signalling gantries at Preston; and £26 million at Hanslope Junction.

During this time, there will be smaller projects being carried out, continuing the £400 million investment by Network Rail (over the next four years), which will see overhead powerlines, platforms, track, and bridges renewed.

Sections of the line will have to close for 22 days to ensure that it can be carried out safely. Operators and Network Rail have been hard at work to ensure that passengers can reach their destinations, including using the Settle to Carlisle line as a diversionary route.

Buses will be in place where no alternative route is available and can be viewed, along with further information, online or with the operating companies.

“This critical work we are delivering over the festive period is a key part of our ongoing major investment plan for the West Coast Main Line, one of the UK’s busiest rail routes.

“These projects will enhance the experience for passengers and freight, improve reliability and performance across the railway line, and ensure it remains fit for purpose for decades to come.

“We know that this work will cause some disruption for those travelling during the festive season so please plan your journeys as early as possible by visiting National Rail Enquiries.”

Christian Irwin OBE, Network Rail’s capital delivery director for the North West & Central region
