The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has released a statement after a London North Eastern Railway train passed through Grantham South Junction more than twice the speed limit.

1Y80, which was the 07:08 Middlesbrough to London Kings Cross, passed through Grantham South Junction at 56 mph on the 26th September 2025, at around 09:20 in the morning.

The speed limit for this junction is 25mph over diverging points, and whilst it wasn’t going linespeed for a train on the mainline (125mph), it caused the train to lurch sideways, and passengers reported minor injuries.

Having reviewed evidence and taking into account similar incidents at Spital Junction in Peterborough, the RAIB has decided to produce a safety digest.

This will be available via the RAIB in the next few weeks.
