Customers are set to benefit from a renovation of Cardiff Central station, now that funding has been approved.

The plans have been under development throughout the year and have achieved the green light.

The station is planned to remain open while the £140 million project is carried out to create a larger concourse, improved accessibility, waiting areas, cycle storage, enhanced passenger flow, and retail options.

The plans will modernise the station to keep up with demand while preserving the building’s history.

The funding for the project has come from the Department for Transport, the Welsh Government, and the Cardiff Capital Region, with Transport for Wales leading the project.

Future plans are also being discussed in a Wales Rail Board meeting in Cardiff today, to assess spending, current and future project opportunities.

From this, Transport for Wales will publish a report by the end of the year on the future of rail in Wales, named ‘Today, Tomorrow, Together’

“This is a major milestone for our ambitious plans to upgrade Cardiff Central station, a key hub on our South Wales Metro and gateway to Wales’ capital city.

“The joint £140m investment between Welsh Government, UK Government and Cardiff Capital Region will modernise and enhance the station, benefitting passengers and accommodating our ambitions for long term growth.

“The newly revamped Wales Rail Board will also meet for the first time today to discuss future projects such as this and relevant funding.

“I’m extremely pleased that Vernon Everitt will Chair the board as he brings a wealth of experience and expertise, that will help lead us into the future.”

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates

  1. What a pity. No doubt it will be a typical uninspiring, boring, ugly piece of modern tat, just like so many other hideous modern railway stations. Why is it that these calibanesque, destructive developers cannot leave anything alone? Modern railway stations are some of the most depressing, shabby, flimsy and inadequate places to catch a train. None of them will stand the test of time and in about a dozen years or so they will become so delapidated that the whole pantomime will start again. Traditional railway stations are far superior, much more tranquil too.
