A 1970s bridge in Frome has been successfully strengthened to help prevent faults.

Network Rail began work on the Protway bridge earlier this month, causing disruptions to the A362 and train services.

They worked to install additional steel on the underside of the bridge to help with weight distribution. They also repainted and grit-blasted the bridge, adding new anti-collision markings.

This work was essential to future-proof this section of the line now that trains are becoming faster and more frequent.

The A362 and all services have now resumed to normal.

“We thank people living in and around Frome for their patience while we completed our work.

“It’s essential all our bridges are fit for a modern railway and this work will keep passengers and road users safe for decades to come.”

Vaheesan Maheswaran, Network Rail lead portfolio manager
