Tenby railway station in West Wales is to gain a new, fully-accessible footbridge with lifts.
The upgrade work, to be carried out by Network Rail, is supported by the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme and by the Welsh Government.
Once they are installed, the lift and footbridge will enable disabled people, and people with pushchairs or luggage, to reach the platforms without being hampered by steps.
Network Rail points out that making stations accessible in this way supports wider aims to encourage people to use public transport and to reduce carbon emissions across the region.
The work will start next month, when Network Rail’s contractor AmcoGiffen starts to set up the site compound.
The contractor will fence off an area of the station car park near the air cadet huts, which will result in a temporary decrease in the number of parking spaces.

Engineers will carry out most of the work during the day (7:30am to 6:00pm).
However, safety requirements mean that they will have to carry out some of the work overnight (10:00pm to 6:00am). The station will stay open to passengers during the work, which will continue throughout next year.
Tenby railway station, which has previously been nominated in the World Cup of Stations, expects its new facilities to open by Christmas 2026.
Other stations in Wales have seen recent accessibility improvements, including Abergavenny and Cwmbran.
Anyone who would like to learn more about the Tenby station plans is welcome to attend a public drop-in event on Wednesday 19 November, between 3:00pm and 7:00pm, at St Mary’s Church, High Street, Tenby (SA70 8AP).

Network Rail is hosting the event, at which members of the public can ask questions and discuss the project with members of the project and contractor teams.
“We’re delighted to be improving accessibility at Tenby Station, ensuring that all passengers can travel with confidence and independence.
“These upgrades will make a real difference for everyone using the station and reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable railway for the communities we serve.”
