On Thursday, 20th November, train operator Southeastern delivered 200 toys to children in Canterbury as part of its Railway 200 Christmas celebrations.

The toys were delivered to Canterbury on the 09:36 Southeastern service from St Pancras to Canterbury West, which was transformed into a virtual Santa’s grotto with 200 toys that Kent-based charity Demelza would deliver to Kent children.

Demelza, which operates three hospice centres supporting children with serious illnesses, worked with leading UK toy companies Mood Bears, Hornby, and Asmodee, and toyologist Peter Jenkinson, to make the hour-long journey to Canterbury memorable. The train showed how convenient it is to travel by train to Canterbury’s popular Christmas market.

During the journey, passengers enjoyed playing board games from Asmodee and model trains from Hornby, listening to a festive story from a Dickensian performer, and meeting a six-foot Mood Bear mascot called ‘Hope’ who put in a special appearance. The hour-long journey showcased the convenience of rail travel to Kent’s popular Christmas market whilst offering passengers a uniquely festive experience.

After the train arrived at Canterbury West, guests could browse Canterbury’s Christmas Market or take a self-guided tour around the city with mystery guides, an interactive treasure hunt around the city where visitors solve clues while making historical discoveries.

Demelza’s Deputy CEO, Hayley Richardson expressed grateful thanks to Southeastern for its support for Demelza, and the incredibly generous donation of 200 toys would bring joy to so many over the festive period.

The railway industry has a long record of supporting charities. In September Golf Day at Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire raised over £20,000 for the Railway Children charity, and in October train Manufacturer Alstom it has entered a partnership with Back Up, a spinal cord injury charity, to support those with a spinal injury.

“It’s been wonderful to be involved in such a special day. Seeing the joy on our passengers’ faces during the journey and knowing that we’re delivering 200 toys to children at Demelza makes this really memorable. Supporting a hospice in the heart of the communities we serve is what the festive season is all about.”
