Over 2025, the Abergavenny Road bridge in Caersws has been hit multiple times.
Given the repeated disruption caused to both passengers and road users, Network Rail is urging people to “Wise Up, Size Up” to reduce the avoidable issues and costs.
Since 2024, the bridge has been hit 12 times by vehicles, resulting in over 1,100 minutes of delays, temporary A470 closures each time, and over £46,000 in taxpayer-funded repairs.
There are warning signs leading to and on the bridge; however, vehicles that do not fit continue to attempt to use the bridge.

Network Rail plans to add more signs soon to help reduce the collisions, reinforcing their “Wize Up, Size Up” campaign.
While larger vehicles should know the height and width of their vehicle, if they are unsure, they should avoid attempting.
“When a vehicle hits a bridge, it creates a serious safety risk and causes major disruption to the railway, with trains stopped for essential inspections and repairs – meaning people miss important appointments or connections”
“These incidents also carry a significant cost to the public purse – money that could be far better spent on upgrading and maintaining our rail network.
“I’d like to remind all drivers to check the height and width of their vehicles and follow the safety signage on the approach to railway bridges as incidents like this are entirely avoidable.”

Why are repairs to these bridges after being hit by lorries funded by the taxpayer? Surely the lorry operators’ insurance should pay for these. The resulting rise in premiums for the haulage companies might also concentrate their minds to plan routes for their lorries that can accommodate their loads!
