This December, there will be a major timetable alteration, resulting in altered timings and frequencies of trains on the East Coast Main Line.

As this will cause trains to run through level crossings at different times than people may be used to, Network Rail is reminding the public to remain safe and alert at level crossings.

With 6,000 level crossings in operation across Britain, users should remain extra vigilant during this time.

On the East Coast Main Line alone, there were a shocking 109 near-miss incidents reported over the last four years.

The reminder issued included ‘Stop, Look, and Listen’, checking both ways before crossing, understanding and obeying warning signs, both alarms and barriers, and crossing safely but quickly.

While investments have been made in level crossings to help ensure safety, including the installation of improved warning systems and barriers, the danger remains, and people should remain cautious.

The timetable comes into effect on the 14th of December, with both CrossCountry and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) increasing their services.

“Level crossings are a vital part of our railway infrastructure and they demand your full attention, yet complacency and distraction are putting lives at risk.

“With timetable changes coming into effect this December, we urge everyone – whether driving, cycling, or walking – to take extra care and to stop, look, listen and obey the signals every single time. Waiting a few minutes is infinitely better than risking everything.”

David Wortley, Network Rail route level crossing manager
