Great Western Railway has worked hard to provide a friendly and inclusive environment for people with autism.
The operator has not only been recognised for their awareness work between Plymouth and Penzance, but has now gained the National Autistic Society’s Autism Friendly Award for their whole network.
They have provided options for autistic people through providing easily accessible customer service and information.
Many people have benefited from their efforts, including Brodie Pollock, 11, who travels via train regularly.
Some of their efforts have included creating a soundbite series to help people understand sounds they may hear and a virtual video tour of stations to assist with navigation, both of which can be found on their YouTube channel.

They have created sensory packs that contain coping tools, they offer ear defenders at stations, and they have expanded their ‘Try a Train’ initiative.
Passenger assistance for those visiting stations can be found here.
“We are proud to be the first train operator to achieve national autism accreditation across our entire network, building on the success of our 2023 accreditation between Plymouth and Penzance.
“This milestone reflects a sustained commitment to making rail travel more accessible and supportive for all. While I’ve been closely involved in leading these initiatives from the very beginning, it has only been possible through the collaboration of colleagues across many departments who share the same passion for improving the experience of every customer, irrespective of their needs.
“We look forward to continue to look for innovative approaches and solutions for accessibility and welcome suggestions from the travelling public.”
