Next year, Network Rail is investing £7.9 million into improving track, signalling and point systems at Manchester Piccadilly.

Passengers are being notified of the work scheduled to take place in February at the southern approach to the station.

Once completed, the area will have 9,000 metres of new cabling, 11 new sets of points, with modern sleepers.

This section of track is in need of this upgrade as the current infrastructure is aged and often causes disruptions.

Trains will be much more reliable out of the station once it is complete; however, in order to achieve this, services will be disrupted.

From the 14th to 22nd February, no trains from the south and east will run into the station, with some trains from the north and Manchester Airport services to be impacted.

Services will terminate at different stations, so it is essential that passengers check before they travel.

Platforms 1-12 will be closed, but the concourse will remain open, with limited westbound services available from platforms 13 and 14.

Transport for Greater Manchester, Network Rail and Manchester City Council have developed travel plans to keep people on the move, with staff on hand to coordinate bus Bee Network connections.

These plans will be released in the coming months.

Services can be checked online when the changes are released.

“We’re investing £7.9m in renewing the Piccadilly corridor, a stretch of track critical to the journeys of around 400,000 trains into Manchester every year.

“This work is going to significantly reduce disruption for the many passengers who regularly use this route. Once the job is done, we will have a better, more reliable railway.

“The major overhaul over six railway lines can only take place during a full railway closure and we are working closely with train operators, TfGM and Manchester City Council on alternative travel plans to keep people on the move, the full details on which will be published in mid-November.”

Responses

  1. Surely what is really need, and promised once, is a solution to platforms 13 & 14. The two track system has rendered the Ordsal Loop almost a white elephant, because of the congestion on this very busy track. Also, the impact of this work on Avanti services will be huge, they still are not at ‘Virgin’ levels, and this could impact them even further.
