Following a £4.5 million investment into improving the Kyle Line in the Highlands.

Engineers were working away over the past three weeks (19th October – 10th November) on renewing 4.5 miles of track, replacing worn sections of track, ballast, and sleepers.

Surveys were carried out at numerous bridges and culverts to ensure they remain in good condition, and drainage was cleared to reduce flood risk.

Additional work was also carried out at the level crossing at Achnashellach Station.

Train services are now back to normal following the closure.

“The Kyle Line isn’t just one of the most scenic rail journeys in Scotland, it’s a lifeline for the communities it serves across the Highlands. It means a lot to people, whether they’re travelling for work, school, or simply to enjoy the local area.

“The work we’ve carried out was essential to keep the line safe and reliable for years to come. We know how important it is to look after routes like this, and we’re proud to have delivered improvements that will benefit passengers and the wider region.

“We’d like to thank passengers, local residents, and businesses for their patience and understanding while we delivered this important upgrade.”

Scott McMurchie, scheme project manager

  1. It’s good to see the Kyle line getting this sort of attention.
However, and maybe I’m being unfair, but the video showed an AWFUL lot of Network Rail staff involved – quite a few of them apparently just “observing”. Were they all really necessary?
