Train services on the Island Line have resumed today following closures over the past month.
Engineers have replaced the track between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde St John’s Road, including through Ryde Tunnel.
Network Rail says that the conditions in the tunnel are some of the most extreme in the country, with pumps needed to keep the line dry.
Work has also included:
- Points replacement at Ryde Esplanade
- Refurbishment of the footbridge at Ryde St John’s
- Fencing improvements
- Tamping of the track along the whole line to make for a smoother ride
- Vegetation management
- Track inspections to check for areas that need repairs.
“We would like to thank passengers for their patience over the past month while we carried out these vital improvements on the Isle of Wight. By having the whole line closed, we have been able to carry out extensive maintenance and assessments over the whole line and can make immediate improvements where possible.”
George Murrell, Wessex route renewals director

Wonder how long it will be completely open, this time, from the Pier Head to Shanklin before another reason / excuse comes along to have another protracted closure. Surprised there are actually any passengers left who bother with using it .. And what has become of the 2 trains an hour spaced out at 30 minute intervals ?
