An emergency closure has been granted for a footpath level crossing across a railway line in Nottinghamshire after it was the scene of a fatality last Wednesday evening, 28th November.

The fatality happened at the Chestnut Grove level crossing at Burton Joyce on the line between Nottingham and Lincoln.

Following the fatality, Network Rail asked Nottinghamshire County Council to grant an emergency closure order for the crossing, which was duly granted for an initial period of 21 days.

Network Rail has a web page describing how to use level crossings safely, including full, half, and open barrier crossings on public roads, on private roads, and on footpaths, and bridleways.

Last July, a child was fatally injured at a footpath level crossing in Kent, and in October, Network Rail released a video of a teenager narrowly being missed by a train in Norfolk.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends that have been affected by this tragic incident. “Safety is our top priority and we are fully supporting the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) as part of their ongoing enquiries.”

Mark Budden, Network Rail’s route director, East Midlands
