A new cross-country service has been launched between Daventry and Coatbridge.

Direct Rail Services (DRS) is running the service using their Class 88 locomotive.

The environmentally friendly locomotive also runs on the Daventry to Mossend service for Tesco.

It will operate along the 330-mile route, initially as a trial, making it the fourth Anglo-Scottish rail service, meaning that DRS nearly covers the length of England.

“This new service is a fantastic opportunity for those who have considered rail but are yet to make the switch from road.

“One of the key benefits of this service is that it will run on electricity and produce no exhaust emissions, which is fantastic for the environment. Each train can take around 30 HGVs off the roads.

“The unique feature of this train is that it is made up of goods from multiple customers, making it ideal for businesses that would like to benefit from rail but lack the volumes to justify their own train.”

Gottfried Eymer, NTS’s Managing Director for Rail

  1. The freight service is, of course, not from “Daventry”.

Daventry is a town in Northamptonshire that lost its railway in 1963. The freight depot is the Daventry International Railfreight Terminal – or DIRFT – which is located at Crick and at Barby Nortoft, about eight miles from Daventry.
