Network Rail has completed a £3.6m refurbishment of Filey station on the Hull to Scarborough Line in North Yorkshire.

Opened nearly 180 years ago, the refurbishment will make the station welcoming to visitors to the seaside town for generations to come.

Opened in 1846, the station is a Grade II*-listed building. Its refurbishment included repairs to the lantern roof, its glazing and tiles, and installation of walkways for easier and safer maintenance.

The Railway Heritage Trust made contributions totalling £53,000 towards restoring the train shed windows and the roofs of the ancillary buildings.

Below roof level, the café was upgraded, improvements were made to the toilets and drainage, and the train shed, including two ornate cast iron windows, was refurbished.

Stations at seaside resorts such as Filey hold a special place in the hearts of many people and are closely linked to the memories of generations enjoying days out.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, commented that it’s great to see a building with such heritage being looked after to make sure that families and friends can come together on our beautiful coastline for another 180 years.

Filey is one of the stations where Northern has trialled the use of hawks to scare away pigeons that were causing problems to customers. Before the refurbishment started, two years ago, a team of volunteers spent a day sprucing up the station.

“Filey station has been part of so many people’s seaside memories, and it’s wonderful to see it looking its best again. This investment not only preserves a much-loved part of the town’s heritage but also makes sure it continues to welcome local people and visitors alike for many years to come.”

Kerry Peters, director of stations at Northern

“Filey station was built in 1846 by renowned north-eastern railway architect GT Andrews. It retains its original character as a railway station from the first half of the 19th century. We are pleased to have supported Network Rail in their restoration works at the station, which, in 2025, is still fulfilling the role for which it was built.”

Tim Hedley-Jones, Railway Heritage Trust executive director
