Thomson Street Bridge, built in 2022, has been renamed in honour of John Axon, who died trying to stop a runaway train in 1957.

The now-named John Axon GC Bridge remembers the honourable locomotive driver who was also awarded the George Cross after his death.

John spent his career on railways, becoming well-versed in the industry. Unfortunately, on the 9th February 1957, he was on a freight locomotive when the steam brake failed just before Dove Holes.

He instructed Ron Scanlon, his fireman, to jump clear and managed to alert the signalman at Dove Holes.

John remained with the train, trying to regain control; however, it was heading downhill towards Chapel-en-le-Frith South station.

The train was unable to stop and ran into the back of another freight train.

John and the guard on the other train, Frank Creamer, were both killed on impact; however, many lives were saved thanks to John’s actions.

There was a naming ceremony on the 30th of September, with a new blue plaque and sign installed on the bridge.

John’s family, members of the railway community, local councillors, and Rail Minister Lord Hendy were all in attendance.

“Our family is deeply honoured that the new bridge will carry our grandfather’s name.

“His bravery and selflessness have always been a source of pride and inspiration to us, and it means so much to see his legacy remembered in this way.

“The bridge, which is close to where the family lives to this day, stands as a daily reminder of his courage as and this is incredibly special to us all.

“We are truly grateful that the community continues to celebrate his memory.”

Melanie Axon, John’s granddaughter
