SteamRail Wanganui Inc have been working with volunteers from a number of organisations to retrieve Skunk, a steam locomotive, from the sand dunes at Whanganuis South Mole.

Skunk is believed to have been hiding under the sand for 75 years and was found on the 5th September.

At 150 years old, Skunk is believed to be possibly the oldest surviving New Zealand-built locomotive.

The salt, iron sand and years out in the wild have taken their toll on the locomotive, with some planning involved to remove her from the 2.8km of beach.

SteamRail Wanganui Inc says that Skunk will feature in an Open Day in the near future.

SteamRail Wanganui Inc. have been working with volunteers from Mills Albert Ltd, Emmetts Civil Construction, Horizons Regional Council, H.P.F.S Solutions

What a huge effort and a great result.

Hats off to everyone who made this happen, we could not have done it without your generosity and support.

Thank you.
