Stadler has secured an order from Finland for 63 Tango Nordic trams for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, with an option for up to 120 additional vehicles.
This is Stadler’s first order for trams from Finland, and was awarded by Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy, the public transport operator for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
Based on Stadler’s established Tango platform, they are of lightweight construction with advanced systems for optimised driving to make them energy efficient, and adapted for the specific requirements of Helsinki’s urban environment, including a modern design with increased seating capacity and enhanced passenger comfort.
30 years of maintenance is included in the contract, as well as technical support, supply of spare parts, establishment of a local warehouse, and development of a logistics system. They will replace Valmet vehicles dating from the 1970s and 1980s, and support the expansion of Helsinki’s tram network.
Although this is Stadler’s first order for trams for Finland, Stadler provides technical support and spare parts to customers such as VR Fleetcare Oy, warranty services for DR19 shunting locomotives and Sm7 FLIRT trains, and supplies spare parts to the Finnish market through its service centres in Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu, and Pieksämäki. It has previously supplied Finland with more than 100 trains and locomotives, and a total of over 350 vehicles throughout Scandinavia, all accompanied by long-term service agreements for reliability and lifecycle efficiency.
In August, Stadler secured an order for ten trains from Stockholm’s urban transport operator, and early next year is scheduled to start delivering FLIRT trains for regional transport around Helsinki.
Eetu Kinnunen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the City Transport Authority, commented that the board is convinced that this type of tram is the best possible for the demanding conditions of Helsinki.
“The Helsinki Metropolitan Area has a tradition of trams that have defined urban mobility through the decades. We are honoured that the Stadler Tango Nordic has been selected to carry this legacy forward and help shape the future of public transport in this region. Passengers can look forward to a comfortable, modern tram that meets the highest standards.”
