As part of a £3.3 million investment, work to strengthen two platforms at Chesterfield station will begin next week.

40 metre sections of two platforms will be reconstructed to help reduce maintenance costs in the long run.

The platform surface will be removed to allow for new steel cross members to be installed, and then they will use glass-reinforced plastic panels to construct the platforms.

Back in August, Network Rail was preparing for the project, with the aim of work beginning on the 13th October.

During the work, the station will remain open, with a chunk of work taking place over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Additional work will also see the Steel superstructure beneath the platform on Crow Lane will be grit-blasted, repaired and painted before the end of the year.

Some of the platform areas will be boarded off until February to allow for surface work to be carried out, with the expectation that the entire project will be completed in March 2026.

This will bring this section up to date alongside the canopies.

“This investment is vital in maintaining the long-term safety and reliability of Chesterfield station.

“We’re working hard to minimise disruption and deliver modern, resilient platform structures that will serve passengers for decades to come.”

Jonny Ham, Network Rail lead portfolio manager
