As part of the next step in Darlington Station’s transformation, Network Rail is reminding passengers that journeys will be affected this weekend.
Following on from the successful power supply upgrade, engineers will be testing the new signalling system.

This step in the £140 million project will bring the stations’ two new platforms closer to being operational and will enable Network Rail to control the flow of trains more effectively.
On the 11th and 12th October, service alterations will see:
- No CrossCountry services between Leeds/York and Newcastle, with replacement buses in place between Leeds and Newcastle via Darlington and Durham.
- One LNER train per hour between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh via Newcastle on a divisionary route. Other services will run with a replacement bus between York and Newcastle.
- Lumo will have a reduced service between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
- There will be no Transpennine Express services between York and Newcastle, and other services will terminate at York, with buses in place.
- Northern services will have buses in place between Eaglescliffe and Bishop Auckland, as well as between Darlington and Newcastle via Chester-le-Street.
Passengers should check with each of the train operators or with National Rail before they travel.
Luke Durston, Network Rail principal programme sponsor“This weekend’s signalling work is a key step towards opening the new platforms at Darlington station. We’re grateful to passengers, residents, and our partners for their continued patience and support as we work to complete this transformative upgrade.”
