October will see the start of Network Rail’s programme of engineering work on the West Highland Line.

They are investing £15 million to improve the resilience and reliability of the scenic route, which plays a major part in supporting local economies.

The route is a lifeline to remote Highland communities and connects people to Fort William and the Glenfinnan viaduct.

Network Rail will carry out critical repairs, including track renewals, refurbishing structures and improving drainage.

In total, they will replace around 10km of track and 9,100 sleepers,

A bridge near Corrour is being renewed and vegetation managed in the area, as well as renewing the Feith footbridge.

For the drainage works, engineers will renew 5 culverts to help manage increased rainfall and ensure that the structures remain stable.

The programme of work does mean that the line between Crianlarich and Fort William will close for nine days.

The line will close on the evening of the 7th November and reopen on the morning of the 17th November.

“This is a significant investment in the future of the West Highland Line, helping to ensure it remains safe, reliable and resilient for years to come. The route is vital for the communities it serves and for the many visitors who travel to experience one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.

“We appreciate there’ll be disruption as a result of this work and thank passengers and communities in advance for their patience. These upgrades are essential to keeping services running smoothly in a remote and challenging environment.”

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland
