Škoda Group and RegioJet have signed a contract worth over CZK 9 billion to deliver 18 two-car and 16 three-car hybrid BEDMU-type (Battery Electric Diesel Multiple Unit) train units.

Škoda boasts that the trains “represent the most efficient solution to provide environmentally friendly and comfortable transport on key routes in Northeast Bohemia that are not yet electrified”, and that the trains will save up to 19,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

The trains will be able to convert to fully battery-powered or fully electric units in the future.

The trains are expected to enter service in December 2029.

The new trains are battery–electric units with a diesel generator set. The design allows for an extended range, and is fully aligned with the Czech Ministry of Transport’s requirements.

The trains maximise their use of electric power, optimise use of the diesel powerpack, and use renewable HVO fuel (hydrotreated vegetable oil). This means that they are able to optimise operating costs while keeping the impact on the environment as low as possible.

The Panter platform provides the basis for the design of the new trains. The platform is adaptable and already runs in many regions of the Czech Republic. This version uses overhead lines, stored battery energy and the diesel powerpack to power its traction motors, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 19,000 tonnes per year.

The new units will be equipped with advanced digital technologies and will be monitored remotely. Each unit will be fitted with the European Train Control System (ETCS). They will have onboard vending machines, air conditioning, modern passenger information systems, Wi-Fi connectivity, and charging sockets for electronic devices. Level boarding and low-floor interiors will make the trains accessible to passengers with reduced mobility, while barrier-free toilets, dedicated spaces for prams, bicycles and wheelchairs, will be standard.

“With the new units and the gradual modernisation of the line, we will offer passengers faster connections. For example, the journey between Pardubice and Liberec will be shortened by almost half an hour. Our customers can look forward to modern, barrier-free travel and the high-quality service they know from our yellow trains. The new units will provide greater comfort, quieter operation and modern design. Their environmental friendliness is also highly important.”
