A preliminary examination into an incident at London Bridge Station when a train narrowly missed hitting staff has been published by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

The near miss occurred at 00:40 on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, between Blackfriars and London Bridge stations, when a passenger train just missed hitting support staff working on the line during a possession.

As the train approached London Bridge station, the driver noticed two track workers on the line ahead of the train and made an emergency brake application. When the track workers noticed the approaching train, they quickly climbed onto an adjacent walkway.

The incident happened because the track workers involved had mistakenly placed a possession limit board on a section of line that remained open, and trains were still running.

When the near miss occurred, the train was travelling at less than 20 mph, and the emergency brake application by the driver ensured the train stopped before it reached the possession limit board. None of the workers involved in the incident suffered any injuries, nor was there any damage to the train.

After the preliminary examination was undertaken by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, they assessed the circumstances surrounding the incident along with the evidence gathered to date, and published the findings in a safety digest.
