Part of a new four-metre wide, walk and cycleway that passes under the mainline at Oxford, linking Botley Road with Frideswide Square, has opened to the public.
The work is part of improvements by Network Rail, offering better and step-free access for all around Oxford station, in preparation for the introduction of East West Rail services.
This will create more space for pedestrians and cyclists to accommodate the predicted extra capacity.

While the work is still ongoing, the new walkway will be partly shared with cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists will have to dismount from their bikes if they intend to use the new route between Botley Road and Frideswide Square.
The project is working to an amended timescale, which was revised back in January 2025. The project is expected to be completed by late August 2026.
“We’re pleased to have achieved this milestone which will greatly improve access for everyone at Botley Road in Oxford.
I’d like to thank local residents, businesses and the community for their ongoing patience and assure them that we’re on track to the new timeline we committed to earlier this year.”
Marcus Jones, Western Route Director for Network Rail
“The new foot and cycle path is a welcome step in the Botley Road works and a reassuring sign that work is progressing on schedule.
Not only is the new path a much-needed upgrade to the existing walkway, but it will also help to ease the flow of people in and around the area. I look forward to the second walk and cycle path opening next year.”
