Locomotion No. 1 was welcomed into Darlington station by London North Eastern Railway (LNER) yesterday (28th September).
The replica was on a three-day journey between Shildon and Stockton, as part of the Railway 200 celebrations.
Partway through its journey, the newly renovated replica pulled into Darlington station.
The trip reflected the original passenger journey made 200 years ago by George Stephenson’s original Locomotion No. 1.
Special guests were able to witness as Locomotion No. 1 pulled into the station alongside a LNER Azuma, named ‘Darlington’ for the town’s contribution to the railways.
“It’s an absolute privilege to welcome the replica of Locomotion No.1 to Darlington, and for our own Azuma ‘Darlington’ to be involved in such an historic moment. These two icons of rail are not just feats of engineering; they are reflections of the transformative power of innovation. Seeing them side-by-side shows the spirit of progress continues to thrive in the railway industry today.”
David Horne, Managing Director of LNER
