On Wednesday, August 13, Stadler secured a contract to supply Stockholm’s urban transport operator, Stockholm Transport (SL), with ten electric multiple units to supplement its fleet.

The new electric multiple units are for the 65-kilometre-long narrow-gauge Roslagsbanan network, which has a track gauge of 891 millimetres and runs from the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm to Sweden’s capital.

The Roslagsbanan line is unique and requires a special design, which Stadler specialises in, with Stadler trains operating on the line since 2023, proving reliable in service under harsh climatic conditions. The contract is valued at 94 million Swiss francs, with an option for up to 31 additional vehicles.

The new trains will replace existing 30-year-old trains supplied by another manufacturer, and have a capacity for 300 passengers, with 150 seated. They are barrier-free with plenty of space for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Construction of the new trains will take place at Bussnang in Thurgau, Switzerland, with delivery starting in 2027 and operational service in 2028.

In recent years, Stadler has secured several major contracts in Scandinavia, including:

  • Sweden, where AB Transitio ordered 13 KISS double-decker trains last week, and seven FLIRT trains are scheduled to start operating the Arlanda Express between Stockholm and the airport from late 2029.
  • Norway, where Norske Tog ordered 17 long-distance trains in 2023, with the option for up to 100 vehicles.
  • Finland, where VR Group ordered 20 FLIRT trains in 2022 to supplement its existing fleet of 81, which are designed to operate under arctic conditions.
  • Denmark, where Stadler is delivering 24 battery-powered trains to Lokaltog.

Christian König, Deputy Head of Marketing and Sales at Stadler, commented that Stadler is very pleased with the continued trust that SL places in the company. This order confirms its expertise in delivering tailor-made solutions under demanding conditions. Scandinavia is a strategically important market for the company, and it is proud to expand its presence there further.

“Our modern X15p trains from Stadler have increased comfort for our passengers and enabled better service. With this follow-up order, we are reaffirming our commitment to provide reliable, comfortable, and sustainable public transport for the Stockholm region”

Annika Bergström, Head of Projects for development of Roslagsbanan
