Due to safety concerns following numerous incidents, a level crossing near the Metrocentre in Gateshead has been closed.

The Skiff Inn level crossing at Swalwell has seen many safety concerns arising, and Network Rail has worked with Gateshead Council to respond to these concerns.

There is a long-term closure planned with a temporary traffic regulation notice in place, with the crossing also fenced off to pedestrians.

Some of the incidents that have led up to this closure have included near misses with pedestrians and cyclists, as well as unsafe behaviour, such as seeing people running across the front of trains.

There have been numerous incidents of trespassing and even a case where the emergency brake was used to avoid hitting a girl and her dog.

Pedestrians can use an alternative route of the underpass next to the River Derwent.

The use of the crossing for vehicles is restricted, so people are advised to go via Tundry Way and Derwenthaugh Road.

“The decision to act on Skiff Inn level crossing was not taken lightly but, in the interests of safety, we had no choice, given the frequency and potential severity of recent incidents.

“The temporary traffic regulation order will protect members of the public until a more permanent solution can be found.”

Chris Moore, Network Rail level crossing manager

  1. I can never understand the stupidity of some people. After 200 years of crossings, do we really have isolate our crossings? I worked in the Southern Netherlands three years ago, the crossings give less time to wait, and the people appear to respect the rules. ( Mid you, they also highly respect bicycles there too. Here it is not the same, I regularly visit my local isolated crossing, which is manned, and often have too help the signalman after people ignore the rules on gate access.
