A new rail improvement scheme, which will benefit 7 million people, has been given the go-ahead.

Midlands Connect’s flagship scheme – Midlands Rail Hub is set to transform rail travel across the region.

It will see faster and more frequent connections across the Midlands through two new ‘chords’ and over 10 engineering interventions.

This will see around 300 extra trains daily and 20 million extra seats for passengers.

The scheme was mentioned last month in Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Comprehensive Spending Review, which will help to provide the funding to carry out the scheme.

The scheme is expected to create around 13,000 construction jobs and serve around 50 stations through the Midlands and beyond.

This is a huge step forward, and thanks to the co-sponsors involved- Midlands Connect, Network Rail, Department for Transport and West Midlands Rail Executive, it will see completion in 2028, with some aspects entering service in the early 2030s.
