Network Rail has closed the Cumbrian Coast line until further notice after recent surveys found areas in Bransty Tunnel that needed strengthening,

The surveys were taking place ahead of track and drainage work in August and September. These surveys involved weight tests inside the tunnel to assess any weight limits needed for the machinery that would be used in the work.

However, the surveys have found areas under the railway that need strengthening before work can progress.

Network Rail has now closed Bransty Tunnel to all trains until further notice.

Rail replacement buses will run to keep passengers on the move between Workington and Sellafield.

Darren Miller, Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director, said: “We’re sorry to passengers impacted by this unexpected longer closure of the railway between Whitehaven and Corkicle. The preparatory surveys have revealed previously unknown ground conditions which we need to investigate further so we can carry out repairs and get the line reopened as soon as possible.

“We’re working closely with train operator Northern and our freight customers on alternative routes and rail replacement bus services. I’d encourage anyone planning to travel on the Cumbrian Coast Line to regularly check National Rail Enquiries while we work hard to restore services through Bransty Tunnel.”

  1. It’s not clear why the replacement buses have to go all the way north to Workington and south to Sellafield. In the south they could go only as far as Corkickle and in the north Whitehaven, making for a very much shorter bus journey. Both these stations have good road access.
