Workers have begun building a modern rail innovation and training centre in Barrow Hill in Derbyshire.
The Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe) will be located next to the historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse.
It will include classroom and training areas, commercial workshop space, and specialist research and development facilities, including a digital laboratory.
It is hoped that DRIIVe will create jobs and skills for people in the Chesterfield area, boosting the town’s ambitions to become a leading rail sector destination.
The new centre forms part of the multi-million-pound Staveley Town Deal programme. The Staveley area was among 101 English towns which were invited to submit an investment plan to the Government’s Towns Fund. It received £25.2 million.
Staveley is already home to a maintenance depot.

The innovation and training centre has also received funds from Chesterfield Borough Council and East Midlands Combined County Authority.
The Borough Council is delivering the project in partnership with Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society, with Stepnell as its construction partner.
Expected to open for use in 2026, DRIIVe will support a network of specialist training providers. The providers will offer rail-related education at a wide range of levels, from level two to postgraduate training and research.
DRIIVe will also provide a base for rail-related supply chain businesses, which will be able to use it to access the latest research and innovation. It is hoped that this will make it a prominent location for rail technology.

“EMCCA is proud to help fund the development of a state-of-the-art rail innovation and training centre in Barrow Hill. This exciting project will not only create jobs and skills opportunities for residents but also inspire the next generation of rail professionals. It will also strengthen Chesterfield’s position as an innovative destination for the rail sector, offering our young people a path into a rewarding career. We are excited to see the impact this will have on Chesterfield and the region upon its opening in 2026 as we continue to deliver for our residents.”
Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands
