Ty Glas Station and its level crossing on the Coryton line will be receiving major upgrades from Transport for Wales.
The upgrades are to allow Transport for Wales to introduce new trains onto the line.
This means that both the level crossing and the station will be closed from the 19th July.
Once safety upgrades have been completed, the level crossing will reopen, which will be much sooner than the station itself.
They will be replacing the floor of the level crossing and creating a new pathway that leads to the station to make it safer.
The station will be closed for around 10 months, aiming to be reopened by spring 2026.
During the work, they will be extending the platforms to allow for the new electric trains, which are being introduced as part of the Welsh Government’s £800 million investment into new trains.
Five new Class 756 tri-mode trains will be introduced on the railway to help increase onboard capacity.
Passengers will be diverted to Birchgrove station, which isn’t too far from Ty Glas, and those needing to cross the railway will need to use the Caerphilly Road Bridge.
Further information on the diversion routes can be found on Transport for Wales’ website.
”The temporary closure of Ty Glas station and its level crossing is a necessary step in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our passengers as we prepare to introduce brand-new tri-mode trains onto the Coryton line.
“These upgrades will not only support the introduction of our new electric trains but also bring long-term benefits to the community by improving the safety of the level crossing, which is more important than ever following the introduction of these much quieter trains.”

Would be ideal if Network Rail and Transport for Wales could continue on electrifying the South Wales line to Swansea and to allow the GWR Class 800 & TfW Class 756 to operate on AC 25kv OHL.
