From the 14th September to the 27th September, Network Rail will be installing 16 sets of signals between Shalford and Gomshall.

Due to this, Network Rail is advising passengers wishing to travel between Guildford and Reigate that the line will be closed for two weeks.

The new signals will mean that trains are safer and more reliable, and will boost the capacity of trains in the future.

The disrupted services between Guildford and Gatwick Airport will be replaced with a rail replacement bus for the entirety of the closure.

Engineers will be taking advantage of the closure to carry out work on four level crossings.

Brook and Burrows Lane level crossings will be replaced with new level crossing technology, including radars which scan the crossings for obstructions.

At Chilworth and Tangley level crossings, they will be fitting CCTV systems to allow the signaller to safely operate barriers.

Chilworth, Burrows Lane and Brooks level crossing upgrades will see a road closure from 00:01 on the 14th September to 06:00 on the 28th September.

Tangley will be closed from 23:00 on the 13th September until 06:00 on the 15th September.

From the 15th, the crossing will be controlled by traffic management during the day. The crossing will then be closed from 22:00 – 06:00, which will continue until 21:59 on the 25th September.

“We are advising passengers who use the North Downs Line between Guildford, Reigate and Gatwick Airport to please note the dates of this upcoming closure.

“Upgrading the signalling is critical to ensuring we’re providing a safe and reliable railway and will also increase capacity and allow for additional services to run in future, allowing more passengers across Surrey to connect with Gatwick Airport.”

“We know that there is never a good time to close the railway or level crossings and recognise this may be disruptive to rail passengers, motorists and pedestrians alike.

“We’d like to apologise in advance and thank anyone effected for their patience and understanding while we complete these important upgrades.”

Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director, said
