The station at Pontoon Dock on London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) system has received funding to make the station less congested at peak times and fit for the future.
The project, costing around £43.9m, is due to start in mid-2026 and will feature six new escalators, larger public spaces at street and mezzanine levels, and new retail spaces, most of which will be delivered by contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.
With the station situated 13 metres above street level, the only current access to the platforms is via steps and lifts.
During peak times, the lifts at the station can become overcrowded with commuters forming queues to use them.

75% of the funding for this project is coming from third parties, most notably TfL’s Sustainable Housing and Accessibility Fund, Greater London Authority (GLA) and Homes England.
The station’s upgrade is also part of the larger Silvertown Quays development, which will enable the station to become fit for the future. The redevelopment of Silvertown Quay aims to regenerate the area, create 6,500 new homes and 10,000 jobs, while also establishing a spirited urban community.

Once complete, the projected use of passengers using Pontoon Dock station is expected to increase by 416% when compared to current passenger numbers.
Work on the station’s upgrade is expected to last two years, with expected completion due in late 2028.
“This major upgrade is great news for the Pontoon Dock area and London as a whole. It means we can futureproof this station, support thousands more journeys and improve accessibility. Crucially, it will also help unlock 6,500 new homes and 10,000 jobs, driving regeneration and economic growth in the Royal Docks, supporting the Mayor’s aim for a more prosperous London for all.”
Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance
“Our vision is a London where everyone can move around the city safely, comfortably and sustainably. The transformation at Pontoon Dock will make life easier and more comfortable for customers, through reduced congestion and enhanced accessibility. It will also play a central role in supporting important regeneration in the local area, helping to unlock around 6,500 new homes and 10,000 new jobs at Silvertown Quays.”
Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at Transport for London
The Docklands Light Rail system is a key network transporting people around and across the River Thames in East London. With new trains expected to run on the network later this year, there are also plans to expand the operating network.
