Thanks to local station adopters, a new wildflower garden has been created at Cardross Station.

The hard work that the Cardross Organic Gardeners put into the area will help boost essential pollinators and wildlife in the area.

They carried out the project as part of ScotRail’s ‘Adopt a Station’ initiative. The programme helps local communities brighten up and bring new life to stations.

The gardening group alongside The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) Scotland team have selected numerous native wildflower species to help create a biodiverse area for bees, butterflies, bats and birds.

The garden also improves customer experience at the station, offering a bright pop of colour when on the platform.

The initiative is open to numerous community organisations, and following many other successful projects, which have led them to win the Top Green Apple Award 3 years ago, ScotRail hopes to bring more of these projects alive.

Not only do gardens like this improve biodiversity, they help create healthy soil through new root systems, which helps reduce flooding and improve carbon sequestration (the removal of carbon from the atmosphere where it is then held in the soil).

“We are thrilled to see the fantastic work of the Cardross Organic Gardeners transform the station environment.

“The wildflower garden is a wonderful example of how ScotRail’s ‘Adopt a Station’ programme can positively impact both the railway and the local environment.

“I would encourage customers travelling through the station to take a moment to enjoy the new garden and witness first-hand how community involvement is making a positive difference across Scotland’s Railway.”
