The , which is celebrating its 300th anniversary, has begun a new contract with n-gage.io, experience software specialists.

The Railways’ rich history of coal transport from the Tanfield area to the River Tyne for shipments is unrivalled.

Passengers travelling on the railway today can see restored Victorian carriages and locomotives.

They have now unveiled a new mobile app focused on visitor experience, to help people make the most out of their visits.

n-gage.io and the railway are exploring how technology could play a bigger part in improving the passenger experience.

The app includes some interactive features for people to use so the railway can get a better insight into visitor views.

They plan to use the app to not only improve visitor experience but also to better explain its rich history and 300th anniversary. Passengers will be able to enjoy interactive points as they walk and travel along the line using the trails feature.

Supporters and sponsors will also be able to keep up to date with restoration and conservation work, as well as campaigns and event programmes.

They will also be utilising targeted and personalised notifications to help drive fundraising efforts.
