Another Greater Anglia station has been recognised for its ongoing environmental efforts.

Volunteer station adopters at Brundall Gardens station have received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

The RHS’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’ has been given to volunteers for their continued work on the gardens on the station’s platforms.

Gillian Lincoln and Greg Chandler have received the award for their efforts. This isn’t the first award they have received either; for the year 2021, they were the first station adopters to receive a ‘Wildlife Friendly Accreditation’.

They received a Level 4 achievement for their past year’s work and are aiming for a Level 5 certificate this year.

Participants received feedback on how to grow and develop the gardens and will continue to receive annual visits from an RHS assessor, who will provide further advice.

Anglia in Bloom and the RHS praised the station and noted that it was thriving. The station has a high level of consideration for wildlife, community involvement, and personal effort from volunteers to maintain plants.

The volunteers were also praised for their displays not being dependent on annual bedding and their use of sustainable options, including compost bins and harvesting rainwater.

Greater Anglia has been working to improve its stations for many years now, with the aim of improving biodiversity, from its very first Norfolk Wildlife Trust accreditation to its annual open gardens event.

“We were delighted to receive this recognition. I think the most joyous aspect of being an adopter for me is the pleasure Brundall Gardens brings to young and old alike. The station is not just for rail users – it is for everyone.”

“I am growing all this year’s summer plants at home, using peat-free compost mixed with my own. Moving forward, our aim is to increase the number of wildflowers and naturalised areas of the gardens.”
