Due to record-breaking misuse, an emergency closure order has been granted for a level crossing in Barnsley.
Network Rail made an application for closure to Barnsley Council yesterday (15th May) following a shocking disregard for safety over the last eight weeks at the Wilthorpe footpath.
During this time, 15 incidents have occurred involving adults and young people.
Some people took it upon themselves to lie down on the live rail to pose for photographs, hold gates shut, which prevented others from leaving the track and led them to kick the gates, placing ballast on the rail and crossing when trains were coming.
Shocking footage shows just some of the disregard for safety, people whose actions put numerous lives in danger.
The emergency closure will last for three weeks, after which Network Rail will be applying for a six-month temporary traffic regulation order.
“The footage from Wilthorpe is truly shocking and the worst I’ve seen for misuse and disregard for level crossing safety. People are repeatedly risking their own and other people’s lives. The crossing has limited sighting of approaching trains and we’re fortunate not to have had a fatality.
“We are aware that this is a popular walking route for residents and our decision to seek this emergency closure was not taken lightly. But given the evidence and the severity of the situation, we believe that closing the crossing is the most responsible course of action to prevent any potential accidents or injuries.
“We understand that this decision may disrupt daily routines, and we’re sorry for the any inconvenience caused, but the safety of the public is our top priority.”

OK, but since when did Barnsley have 3rd rail? According to the NR statement it says ‘live rail’
So the public once again not taking head of safety warnings and thinking it’s a joke to play life or death with trains? Sounds about right to me.
It’s sad that these are the drastic measures that Network Rail have had to make because of small-minded people, but I do understand why they do it and respect them for thinking of public safety.
