The new cycle hub in Sheffield Station has been opened by East Midlands Railway.

The hub is one of the largest of its kind, providing space for 452 bikes, spanning two levels.

It was already the most heavily used cycle storage facility on the East Midlands Railways network.

Usage has continued to increase, so EMR invested £71,000 to improve storage, with a further £7,500 provided by the Railway Heritage Trust.

The new hub has a new look and better functionality, with the flooring having been repaired and coated with an anti-slip coating. The toilets have also had a bit of a refresh.

New bi-folding doors have been installed to make access easier for any bike size or type.

To help with the storage of non-standard bikes, EMR have included four cycle hoops which are designed for family bikes or accessibility bikes.

There is also a cycle repair stand, and a community notice board has been put in.

Abandoned bikes were removed and donated to A Different Gear, and new CCTV, fob access, and a lift have been added to the facility.

“We’re really proud to unveil this improved facility for our customers.

“At EMR, we’re passionate about encouraging active travel as a way to reduce congestion, lower emissions and support healthier lifestyles. This investment puts the cycle hub back in top condition and makes it easier than ever for people to choose sustainable ways to reach the station.”
