East Midlands Railway has made upgrades to the ventilation system at Sheffield station.

They made the upgrade to the station as part of their Getting There Greener strategy and the Clean Air Improvement Plan.

Working with Colt Construction Ltd, they have installed new roof air vents above the taxi rank just outside the station. With the discreet vents, they can reduce nitrogen dioxide levels, which improves the air quality in the enclosed space.

While East Midlands Railway already has a no-idling policy for taxis to help reduce harmful pollution, they have improved the issue even further.

They took readings before installing the vents, and since installation, there has been a 35% reduction in nitrogen dioxide during their reference monitoring period.

Further monitoring of the vents’ productivity will be continued as other improvements also go into place.

“We all want cleaner, healthier spaces – especially in places like stations, where lots of people come and go every day. These early results at Sheffield are really encouraging and its clear they are already having a positive impact.

“However, this is just one step in our wider strategy – Getting There Greener – which is focused on taking real, measurable steps to create healthier, more sustainable environments for passengers, staff, and the communities we serve.

“There’s more to come, and we’re excited to keep making progress on this important issue.”
