After a 16-week £140 million project to electrify the line between Glasgow Central and East Kilbride, normal train services will resume on Sunday, 18th May.
Sunday, 18th May, also marks the start of the new ScotRail timetable, so passengers should check their journey in advance as times have changed since January when the line closed for improvements.
As well as installing overhead line equipment to electrify the line, Network Rail Scotland has made significant improvements to the track, signalling, and bridges along the route.
Until the full length of the line is fully electrified, services between Glasgow Central and East Kilbride will continue to be operated by diesel multiple units, with electric trains scheduled to be introduced on the route later this year.
Among the improvements most noticeable on the line are a new station at East Kilbride, a new two-platform station with an accessible footbridge at Hairmyres, a new footbridge at Busby Station, improved access to Giffnock Station, a new entrance and a new accessible footbridge at Clarkston Station.
A number of bridges on the line also had to be replaced, including at Thornliebank Road on the south side of Glasgow, and at Westerton Lane near Busby Station.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming customers back to the East Kilbride line this weekend. The modernisation works completed by Network Rail Scotland are a crucial part of building a better, more reliable railway for the future, and we thank our customers and the local communities for their patience while the improvements were delivered.”
