Over the last 12 months, CrossCountry and technology company LearnLive have reached over 63,000 students, raising awareness about the importance of rail safety in schools.

Currently covering 150 schools, it is hoped that all schools across the country will be enrolled in the Rail Safe Friendly Programme by 2027.

The programme has tools and resources that can be conducted in class and virtually online, covering areas such as how to travel the network safely and the detrimental effects of trespassing on the railway. Each area covers safety awareness and potential dangers associated with the modern operational railway.

Upon completion of the programme, each school is awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze status, demonstrating their commitment to teaching students about keeping safe while on and about the railway network.

“The Rail Safe Friendly Programme has played a crucial role in addressing the pressing issues surrounding rail safety. We have identified several hotspots where incidents are prevalent, particularly noting a troubling rise in trespassing among young people.

Trespassing poses significant risks not only to the individuals involved but also disrupts the entire railway system, affecting countless others who rely on safe and efficient train services.

The programme serves as an excellent initiative for sharing vital information about rail safety. By working with various stakeholders, we can strengthen our outreach efforts and ultimately contribute to saving lives.”
