The North Norfolk Railway is joining the 80th anniversary celebrations of VE Day on the 8th May.

War Department steam locomotive 90775 “The Royal Norfolk Regiment” will be hauling trains throughout the day.

Before its closure in 1964, the original Midland and Great Northern line operated trains throughout East Anglia and was set to be taken over by LNER before the war, which extended its independence.

During the war, the line became vital for transporting supplies and people, while East Anglia became significant in strategic efforts.

Weybourne saw an increase in traffic with an M&GN report saying a diminutive J15 locomotive hauled a 14-coach train full of troops bound for Muckleburgh.

“The Second World War undoubtedly had a profound effect on every area of life, and its impact on the railways was immense with goods traffic increasing as part of the war effort, evacuees transported from the towns to safer rural areas and hundreds of troop trains needed to help get the nation’s forces in the right place.

“It is fitting that 90775 is scheduled to be in action on the 80th Anniversary as the locomotive was designed to be robust but cost-effective to build and when new in 1943 was sent to Egypt to bolster the railways there. After the war, the engine was shipped to Greece and worked well into the 1970s before being repatriated and preserved”
