A part of the investment of £4 billion in Scotland‘s Railway between 2024 and 2029 has been used by the Scottish Government to create a new station at Hairmyres.
Train services have returned between East Kilbride and Glasgow following this latest upgrade.
The station investment was announced a few years ago, with more in-depth plans announced two years ago at a community event.

The £16 million station increases connections to work, education and other essential services for passengers. It connects vital staff, patients and visitors to Hairmyres Hospital.
The station is located 600 metres west of its original location, and features step-free access and modern waiting areas to ensure everyone can use the station.
The investment is part of the wider £143 million East Kilbride enhancement project, which includes the electrification of the railway line.

Further upgrades to the station will see a £7.2 million transport interchange delivered in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and SPT. This will include park and ride and bus facilities with cycle parking.
“It is a pleasure to witness years of planning and project delivery come to fruition with the opening of the new Hairmyres Station. It is a clear example of this Scottish Government’s continued commitment to investing in Scotland’s railway and the benefits that this can bring to local communities.
“Making rail more attractive is a fundamental part of encouraging greater public transport use and this latest opening is an exciting milestone as we move towards the completion of the East Kilbride electrification later this year.”
Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport
