Passengers using Sutton station will soon be able to benefit from new, more reliable lifts.

Network Rail plans to take all three lifts out of action to make the replacement quicker. If they were to replace them one at a time, it would be a much longer time frame, leaving one platform lift out of action for months at a time.

Work will begin on Monday, 16th June, with the work expected to be completed by September.

Those who require step-free access are advised to use another station like Carshalton or Cheam, which are accessible.

There are local Transport for London buses which connect the stations.

Those who need extra assistance in planning their journey can speak to station staff, with assisted travel services run by Southern and Thameslink.

Passengers can always check before they travel online and book assisted travel on Southern’s website or Thameslink’s website.

“We recognise closing the lifts will be disruptive, particularly to passengers with accessibility needs, but by replacing all three simultaneously, we can finish the work in approximately 12 weeks, whereas replacing the lifts one by one would have caused significant disruption to the station and passengers and take around nine months to complete.

“We’re working closely with our train operator partners Southern and Thameslink to ensure anyone with accessibility needs can continue using the rail network during this time.

“We encourage passengers to please plan ahead and speak to their train operator or station staff if they have any questions about alternative travel options and thank them for bearing with us while we complete this work.”

Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail Sussex route director
