During Dementia Action Week (19th-25th May), Hull Trains has partnered up with the Alzheimer’s Society.

The leading dementia charity is highlighting the importance of early diagnosis, knowing the common symptoms, and breaking the stigma over the week.

They have created a unique onboard experience which gave a group of people a special day out on the train.

Five people with dementia got to enjoy a return trip to Doncaster, some of whom hadn’t been on a train in years.

During the trip, they had live music from Phil Richards, a Hull singer who sang sixties classics including ‘Brown Eyed Girl’.

Hull trains also helped to organise activities for the guests, including a themed crossword puzzle. Each element of the trip was geared towards creating a relaxing and enjoyable trip, but also to provide mental stimulation.

Each person on the trip had a valuable experience, with different aspects sparking memories or feelings and got to experience something different.

“This has been a wonderful and thoughtful experience for our members. Each activity was not only fun but also designed to encourage memory recall and stimulate the mind, which is so important for those affected by dementia.

“For some, it was their first train journey in decades and brought back some very cherished memories. We’re so thankful to Hull Trains for organising such a meaningful day that will stay with our members and their families for a long time.”

Julie Ibbertson from Alzheimer’s Society
