Repairs to an embankment near Three Bridges on the Brighton Main Line have now been completed after the initial issue arose in January.

Earlier in the year, maintenance teams discovered the landslip between Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges, with one track being taken out of use.

A 30 metre sheet pile wall was put in place to allow the lines to reopen quickly, however, the line needed a more permanent solution.

Repairs to permanently stabilise the the embankment included a reduction in the steepness of the slope and thousands of tonnes of stone was used to backfill the embankment.

The work was challenging due to a nearby allotment and the Gatwick stream.

They had to work around local wildlife and carry out daily checks on dormice, amongst other species, which are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.

The project team built bird and dormice boxes, donated unused hay bales and reinstated vegetable beds the the nearby allotment.

“A landslip on the Brighton Main Line near Three Bridges had the potential to cause major disruption to passengers and freight customers.

“Colleagues worked tirelessly to stop the landslip and keep trains safely moving. Thanks to their efforts, there was minimal disruption to train services, and this critical section of railway has been fully operational throughout the last few months.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of passengers and lineside neighbours during the repair process.”
