Network Rail has completed upgrades over the bank holiday weekend, meaning that trains could run as normal between Gloucester and Bristol this morning.

The line was temporarily closed whilst 600 yards of track was replaced near Gloucester and Wickwar tunnel, a footbridge near Stonehouse was replaced, and new drainage was installed at Charfield.

Ballast was also compacted to ensure its stability, and platforms at Gloucester station were repaired.

Further work will continue over the next two weekends. Some buses may replace trains on the 10th and 11th May between Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon and Bristol.

Further work will take place, including maintenance of points and track equipment. Buses will again replace some services between Gloucester, Cheltenham Spa, Worcester Foregate Street, Birmingham New Street, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire Parkway and Great Malvern.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel online.

“I’d like to thank passengers for their patience over the long weekend as we delivered a series of important upgrades between Gloucester and Bristol.

“Trains are back up and running as normal but services will be impacted by further work in the area over the next two weekends, so please make sure to plan your journey in advance.”
