Armed forces couple, Charlotte and Garry Greenwood, are calling attention to former service personnel and how they can find employment in the rail industry.

Charlotte, who is a reservist and Garry, who spent 11 years in the army, now both work at Network Rail.

They are the leads for Network Rail’s Armed Forces Employee Network in the North and East. Currently, around 10% of Network Rail’s workforce has a military connection.
The couple are keen to show that leadership and discipline are transferable skills which fit perfectly into the rail industry.

I’m April, they hosted an Insight event, with Northern and LNER, welcoming those with military links, where they took part in a workshop and heard first-hand stories of transferring into railways.

Network Rail is committed to supporting those with military links; more information on their commitment can be found here.
“As a reservist and military spouse, I’ve seen the challenges up close – but I’ve also seen how welcoming and supportive the rail industry can be.
“It’s important to recognise both the importance of what service leavers can bring to the table, and what we as an industry can offer them. Around 10% of Network Rail colleagues have a military background, and we should be proud of that.
“We don’t just talk about inclusion, we live it.”

I think that military personnel have highly transferable skills not only for Network Rail but also for train operators, and should be encouraged to explore what is available.
